5 Reasons Why I Love The Movie The Intern

Bear with me on this post because as of right now I’m not really sure where it’s heading – but, I’m watching this movie right now and feel compelled to write about it.

I’m going to start off by saying I’m one of those people who doesn’t like Anne Hathaway. I admit I don’t have a reason. There’s just something about her and Amy Adams in particular that I can’t get on board with. That being said, I’ll put up with her in The Princess Diaries and The Intern – that’s it. I’ve seen this movie maybe 10 times which, aside from The Halloween films, Home Alone, and One Fine Day (an OG Clooney Rom-Com), is a super high number for me. But, it’s such a feel-good movie that draws me in every time it’s on TV, which is at least once a month on TNT.

So, after some consideration, I’ve realized why I love this movie so much. If I’ve kept your attention this long, read on for the 5 most insightful responses to why I continue to watch this movie over and over.

  1. Just gonna get this one out of the way up front – I love Adam Devine. He plays a minor, yet effective role and I’m 100% here for it. He’s like that cute boy from high school who’s outside your friend group and is kind of funny in a quirky way and you dig it. My first “boyfriend” was kind of like that so maybe I’m just trying to relive my past.
  2. Robert De Niro’s character is #GOALS. He’s traditional. Has values. Works hard. Cares about other people. He’s everything. Without spoiling the movie, he plays this retired widow who takes on a senior internship at an online retail startup. He wears a suit, carries an old school briefcase and is a hard worker. I think that kind of man is lost on our generation and it’s a real shame. Send less Snapchats, more flowers.
  3. As much as it kills me to say this, Anne Hathaway’s character is also #goals. She sees an opportunity to start something of her own, finds a way to start it, owns it, and isn’t willing to give it up. I feel that energy, respect it, and hope one day I can manifest it myself.
  4. It just makes you feel good to watch it. A lot of my TV/movie entertainment comes from Bravo, LIVE PD, true crime, Schitts Creek, AHS, and The Voice, with a sprinkle of Downtown Abbey and a whole lot of random Netflix. Needless to say, aside from Schitt’s Creek (HIGHLY RECOMMEND), none of it just makes you feel good to watch. This movie does, and I think that’s why I like it. Also, there’s a couple quotes that really resonated with me — 1. “you’re never wrong if you do the right thing” and 2. “You should be able to have a career and be who you are without accepting that your husband is having an affair.” I think this is huge today – I think a lot of women still think it’s either-or and it’s not. Not necessarily an affair, but sometimes society still tells us that we can’t be super successful independently and have a family and balance it all and that’s wrong. Period.
  5. It motivates me. This is probably attributed to everything I already mentioned but it’s true. There’s something about The Intern and The Wolf of Wall Street that just kicks my creativity into gear and suddenly I’m ready to crush all my goals.

If you’re still with me, more power to you. I watch this movie and talk about it all the time so maybe now I can stop referencing it every chance I get in casual conversation.
