Five Favorites: Podcasts

Until recently — we’re talking until March 2020 — the only podcast I ever listened to was Serial. You know, the one about Adnan Syed who was convicted of killing his girlfriend and burying her in a park but still maintains his innocence? If you haven’t listened and you’re into crime, I highly recommend it. But anyway, it’s the only one I had listened to and I never really got into the whole podcast thing, mostly because I didn’t realize how easy they all were to access and subscribe to. Working in social media and having previously worked in influencer marketing, you’d think I would have been more up to date on this, but I wasn’t — shame on me.

But, when everything closed down and I was forced to find ways to occupy my time other than re-watching Sons of Anarchy and Schitts Creek again (JK, I did that too), I decided to try something new. There are a few bloggers I follow who also have podcasts so I combined that list with a few recommendations from friends and coworkers and decided to give them a go.

For context: my general interests range from #basicbetch to wellness to gruesome murder stories.

Here are my top 5 favorite podcasts right now:

#1 — Morbid: A True Crime Podcast. I love this one because it sounds exactly like how I probably sound when I talk about murders. It’s super factual but also lighthearted and easy-going. And while I realize murder and lighthearted shouldn’t be in sentences next to each other, for this one, it works.

#2 – SkimmThis. Just like it sounds, this podcast aligns with the newsletters and gives you concise recaps on what you need to know in the news. Truthfully, I get a lot of my news from local sources and Twitter so I’m not really savvy on what’s going on in the world but this helps.

#3 — The Blonde Files. I’ve followed Arielle Lorre since she started her Instagram 4ish? years ago and I’m glad I did. She started out sharing updates on her Kayla Itsines BBG journey but it’s since evolved into much more than that. She’s pretty candid about her entire wellness journey sharing everything from being the one to traumatically find her friend murdered to her struggle with addiction and most recently, her plastic surgery stories. Also, her voice is really calming and easy to listen to which is a bonus.

#4 — MOOD with Lauren Elizabeth. Like Arielle Lorre, I’ve followed Lauren Elizabeth for a while now, like since 2015? maybe. Her podcasts pretty much just sound like you’re sitting down with a friend talking about your peak and pit of the week. She’s authentic and keeps it real and I’m here for that these days.

#5 — Diet Starts Tomorrow. So, unlike the previous 4, I’m not 100% committed to listening to this one but I’ll throw it on here and there when an episode looks interesting. It pretty much encompasses everything everyone is thinking and the back and forth we all go through of being on a wellness kick but then pizza and anxiety happen only for the cycle to repeat. I’d recommend giving it a go if you haven’t already.
